Although the game may not be as popular today as it was during the first half of the 20th century, it has nonetheless maintained a strong grip over many baccarat players around the world.
Basic Rules
In punto banco (meaning ‘player-bank’) baccarat you get to chose the type of wager you want to make. The interesting thing about this particular format is that you will not competing against the house, but rather as an outsider, similar to playing ‘behind the player’ in blackjack. In fact you will be allowed to bet with house against the player. A good way to view punto banco baccarat is through the analogy of watching and betting on a football game: you can wager on the red team, the blue team or a tie.
Baccarat functions very similarly to blackjack as each side (player and banker) will be striving to accrue the most favorable combination of 3 cards.
Values
In baccarat cards from 2 to 9 are at face value - tens, jacks, queens and kings are worth zero and aces worth just one point. In baccarat punto banco the best hand will amount to 9, and in the instance of a 2 decimals sum, the first will drop.
Here is an example of a 3 card punto banco draw:
7 + King + 6 = 7 + 0 + 6 = 13. Here the first decimal is surrendered and thus the resulting sum is 3.
Online baccarat punto banco utilizes one deck of 52 cards that is shuffled randomly after each hand.
How the Game Works
The player and banker get dealt two cards. On the players side if the sum is 0-5, he is dealt another card. The player stands if the first two cards amount to 6 or 7.
If any of the two parties is dealt an 8 or a 9, no further cards are drawn in the game and the totaling sums are weighed up against each other.
The banker shall also draw if he has a totaling amount of 0-5 and stand if a 6 0r 7. In the case that the player has been dealt a third card, the following banker rules will follow:
* If the player has drawn a 2 or 3, the banker must draw further cards if he has 0 to 4. In this instance the banker stands if he has 5 to 7.
* If the player has drawn a 4 or 5, the banker must draw further cards if he has 0 to 5. In this instance the banker stands if he has 6 or 7.
* If the player has drawn a 6 or 7, the banker must draw further cards if he has 0 to 6. In this instance the banker stands if he has a 7.
* If the player has drawn an 8, the banker must draw further cards if he has 0 to 2. In this instance the banker stands if he has 3 to 7.
* When the player draws an ace, nine, ten, or any face card, the banker is obligated to draw if he has 0 to 3 and stand if he has a 4 to 7.
Of course, following these rules whilst you play will be difficult for the game resolves each hand quite rapidly. Nonetheless, if you were ever interested in playing the game in land based casinos this guide should be just as useful.
