Sports Gambling Basics

Saturday, January 7th, 2012

If you combine two man’s greatest interests, you will get something called sports gambling. Can you think about something more ingenious? When men are watching their favorite team, they almost every time bet on the game too.

Think about it. With every sport there are always certain highlighted games everyone’s talking about; something that, according to sports buffs, will change the course of history. In order to get some of the action, spectators usually attempt to guess who will win in the upcoming games. This all turns into a friendly little game called sports gambling.

Sports gambling might sound addicting, but if you just bet a little amount of money, it is just a great way to bond with your friends. And the outcome of the game will maybe also be more interesting, if you are trying to guess the winner.

To place a bet, all you have to do is go to a sports book, which is a place that accepts sports bets. In the United States, there are four states where you can do sports gambling legally.

You can place a bet on almost every sport event like football, baseball, basketball and even dog and horse racing. There is almost no limits as long as the bet is placed on something that has to do with sport.

Statistics is used to predict the winner team. Something called a spread is used to predict the weakest team that is probably will lose by a certain number of points. This way the bets is possible for a sports book.

In sports gambling there is a lot of different kinds of bets. Straight bets, where you must predict the winner (or loser) is the most common one. Another one it the over/under bets, where you are guessing how many points the two teams score.

When you are betting on several games it is called parlays. Teasers are almost the same, except that you add or subtract points from the spread to make the bets better.

This is the basics of sports gambling. Why don’t you give it a try, and have a lot of fun in the process. Just remember not to get too carried away and spend your entire 401K plan on a whim. You just might end up regretting it for life

Lottery Results: What Makes Them So Interesting?

Friday, January 6th, 2012

We have all waited for examination results, match results and so on and so forth. But have you ever waited for a lottery result? Be it a participant or not, lottery outcomes excite every one. Waiting for the results with your figures crossed and baiting breath is a different kind of fun altogether. People’s expectations increase with the size of pot; larger the pot bigger the anticipation.

It is fascinating to see people wait for lottery results far and wide, even if they have nothing to do with it. After all, it’s interesting to witness one’s life change in no time with just a combination of few numbers.

Perhaps this is why the trend of telecasting lottery draws on TV has been born. Even TV producers have realized that these programs can increase the ratings substantially. It’s also beneficial for the lottery organizers who want to make their lottery more popular.

But are lottery results always authentic? There is actually no reason to believe that dishonest practices are there in all lotteries, but at the same time no matter how transparently everything is organized and conducted, there is always a slim shadow of doubt.

In spite of all the scams and controversies, people still continue to love lotteries and are hooked to the lucky draw programs that come on TV.

Truth be told, computers can be hacked and mechanical lottery machines can be tampered with, unless there are enough security features and checks in place. But if the fraud is internal, there is little that can be done.

Therefore it is always a safe bet to participate in lotteries which are regulated by the government bodies and have built their reputation from scratch.

Finally, keep your fingers crossed before lottery results, but don’t cry foul if you don’t win! After all that’s a part and parcel of the game called lottery and you take a chance knowing that the odds are stacked against you.

Some Tips on Playing Texas Hold’em Poker

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

Texas Hold’em is the single most popular poker variant today and has been for years for newcomers as well as professionals. The greatest feature of the game is that it is easy to learn because of its simple rules. From here on though, it really begins to shine even brighter because of the complicated, labyrinthine strategies that can take decades to master, if even then. Following are some rules central to the game meant to be an introduction for the beginner and a chance to sharpen the skills of the more advanced player.

Texas Hold’em Game Play format

A maximum of ten players can play in a Texas Hold’em game and the dealer is sometimes chosen by the draw and the high card gets the deal and sometimes the house simply designates a dealer. Whichever, the dealer is in the button position or last to play, which makes it a much sought after position to be in. The first to play and therefore, to bet, is the small blind, the player next to the dealer and this player begins by anteing 50% of the limit of the game, then comes the big blind, followed by all remaining players. The button is sought after as he who plays last has the opportunity of seeing everyone else’s raises and re-raises, or lack thereof, and can get a nice picture of his opponent’s hands by doing so.

Texas Hold’em players can call, raise or fold on the ante bet. The limit games place a cap on raises whereas the no-limit games do not, but even the no-limit games will often put a cap that allows only three raises per betting round. Also in no-limit, players can go “all in” by raising the limit to the amount of their current stash. Pot-limit players can raise up to the level of the value of the existing pot.

Beginners will generally start their Texas Hold’em education in limit games. Once they have gained skill and experience here, they move on to the more lucrative, therefore more advanced, no limit games. The winner either wins blind or has the premiere 5-card hand formed from hole cards and community cards. A player “wins blind” when all the other players have folded upon his raise, and he is the last man standing, thereby receiving the win and the pot. The hands are ranked in the following fashion, best first: Royal straight flush, straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pair, and a pair and a high card.

Texas Hold’em Play Recap

A round of betting starts the game with a flop to show the table the community cards. Before the flop though, the players bet on only their hole cards. At this point, the players have the option to fold, call or raise to the limit the particular game allows. In any case, the strongest starter hand would be a pair of aces, while the weakest is an unsuited 2-7.

The following round of betting comes after the flop so the community cards are shown to the table. As stated above, the small blind leads the way. The fourth community card (”turn”) is dealt followed by the final, fifth card (”river”). The best hand at showdown wins the pot, unless of course all but one have folded, then the survivors hand, whatever it is wins.

The Basics of Playing Royal Hold’em Poker

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Playing a game of Royal Hold’em is not the exclusive right of the reigning monarchy. The game does have some features found in limit Texas Hold’em but its differences are greater than its similarities. The game involves a 20-card deck consisting solely of the kingly cards of ten, jack, queen, king and ace. You can see where it gets its name. The game is played with a maximum of six players owing to the shortened deck.

How Royal Hold’em is Played

The basic limit format of poker is used whereby players are dealt two hole cards and the aim is to combine them with five community cards to produce the best hand. The way the hands are ranked are the same as usual but only the Royal flush can be counted, no other flush and your basic pairs count for naught. This leaves the players drawing to Royal flushes, four of a kind, full houses, straights and two pairs to come up with the winning hand.

The Zenith of Royal Hold’em Strategy

Since the lower cards do not exist in the game, the high hands reign supreme. Selecting exclusively quality cards is paramount to being a successful competitor in the game. The very lowest hand a player should give thought to to remain in the game is the ace-jack, this being a very iffy hand at that. The majority of players will tell you that a superior hand is a pair of kings or aces, with queens and ace-king a close second. In contrast a hand on the brink would be ace-queen and a pair of jacks and the holder of these should stay in the game only if his position warrants it.

Now, lets move on to the position. Due to the high quality of the Royal Hold’em hands, the position become highly significant as you can consider that any player raising has a pair of kings or aces and from your catbird seat, you can zero in on the hands of the players who stay with the game. A player with a so-so hand should only play it if he is in good position or in the case of a small blind where there is no raise in advance. High ranking pairs are everywhere in this game and the odds of drawing into a three of a kind is higher than one in three considering the organization of the cards in the hand. Should another player be betting aggressively against your hand of a pair of aces, it is quite probable he is holding aces too or a pair of kings, and you can pinpoint without difficulty the kinds of hands the strong better is holding.

All players are looking to draw to three of a kind or in excess of that and hold the thought that you all have a set of 15 cards to draw from in which to build your hands (20 card deck minus two hole cards plus five community cards). This should make it clear to you that you always want to play your good hands with authority and forcefulness and to keep your pot odds in mind before you continue to bet and you can be assured that if any player is keeping up with your aggressive betting on the turn that he has a hand of three of a kind or better. Examine this scenario: You have in your hand two kings and the flop show up with an unsuited king-jack-ten which is only second to the ultimate hand of ace-queen. It is quite probable that you are in contention against ace-king or jack-jack. In this instance you must take heed of the number of outs possible to a full house or the odds that your opponent is holding a straight depending on the way he is betting and his position.

How Razz Poker is Played

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

It seems that whenever a game is featured in the World Series of Poker, it gains quite a following and so it goes with Razz poker. It is becoming popular though not for just this reason, it also contains some very unusual and interesting play mechanics. Stripped down to its skivvies, Razz is the same as ace-low stud poker as the goal in each game is to obtain the lowest possible hand, a suited ace through five. HORSE includes it as one of its mixed game play components and Razz has been known to present some real challenges to the beginning player. This primer is intended to inform the new player of the nuts and bolts of Razz game play and to introduce them to the strategies to start them on the way to success.

The Workings of Razz

Razz is structured like low-hand seven card stud as mentioned above and up to eight players play the game in a limit-bet format. A game commences with each player receiving three cards, two of them face up and one face down, after which comes the first betting round let by the player with the highest face up card. In case of a tie for highest card, the tie goes to the suit. Another round with the deal of a face-up card and the lowest hand starts off the betting round. The rounds go on until each player is dealt their fifth card whereupon the bets double in size. The final card is dealt face down and the next round is led by the player who began the sixth round. If this player folded prior to the round, then the second player in the sixth round begins and so on.

The Optimum Razz Strategy

An unsuited ace, two, three would be the lowest possible starting hand in Razz and a sensible strategy would be for the players with low, single cards below ten to remain in the game to the next round. A player with any hand of single cards below seven has a strong hand and an all out aggressive strategy is a good option should the other players be showing a weaker one. If the holder of the seven-high hand sees that the lowest face up card on the table is a ten, his odds at the pot are very high and he should proceed to value bet.

All players must closely observe the visible cards and recalculate their odds of obtaining a pair (a bad thing) or single cards (a good thing). It is not unusual for a player to take advantage of his table position to form a betting strategy when opponents are showing lower cards. A good strategy here would be to value bet even if you are drawing into the fourth round because you have a strong starting hand plus you may be drawing into an even lower one. The other players may be also drawing into lower hands and placing some profound bets, enhancing the pot for you.

A deep understanding of the tactics and strategies of Razz is supremely important to becoming a competitive player. You must know when to fold on a loser and not expect to draw to a low hand when it is a very long shot as your opponents are apt to have a lower hand from the get go. You must also know that a good table position gives you a betting edge as you may encourage players with marginal hands to remain in the game and ante up till they fold, donating all those antes to the pot, which is yours.
