How To Use The NBA Spread For Betting On Games

Monday, April 11th, 2011

During the regular NBA season, thirty teams play for six months to see who makes it to the playoffs. Each team plays an 82-game schedule. As the season progresses, many fans play a game within the game by betting against the NBA spread.

There are several types of bets which can be made on NBA games. Fixed-odds means you select just the winning team. Point spreads, or lines, are a little more complicated because they involve score adjustments made by oddsmakers. With this additional factor, the final score plays a part in the bet.

Although it is fairly easy to understand how point spreads work, some people are hesitant to place these types of bets because of the added complexity. The basic thing to know is that each team will be assigned a number with plus or minus sign. This line shows which team is the favorite and which team is the underdog.

Here is an example. You might see a line on a game showing Dallas Mavericks (-5) and Phoenix Suns (+5). In this case, Dallas is the favorite team and Phoenix has the handicapped score as the underdog. If you were to bet the spread on Dallas, you would only have a winning bet if the Mavericks win by six points or higher. The bet is a push with no winner or loser if the Mavericks win by exactly five points.

Spreads are important when selecting your winning team. If the Thunder win 104-100, this means they only won by four points and did not cover the spread. In this case, you would not have a winning bet even though you picked the winning team. The Trail Blazers can lose the game and still win the bet if they lose by less than ten points.

On some spreads, an additional number in parentheses shows odds. For the Oklahoma City game, suppose you see (-105) as the pay out. This number means you wager $105 to win $100 plus the amount of your bet. Another popular side bet is the over/under number which means you predict the total amount of points scored by both teams. If the over/under number is 208 and the Thunder win 104-100, the total score is 204 and those picking the under would win.

There are many different ways to bet on games. To use the NBA spread, it is important to know the basic facts about how the numbers work so that you can make an informed wager. Although it might be a little more difficult to predict winners using spreads, it makes the betting experience more exciting and challenging with more chances to win.
