The Most Legendary Five Professional Point Guards Of This Past Two Decades
Wednesday, July 20th, 2011If you look at most successful basketball teams, there’s a highly skilled point guard in place running the show on offense. These are the guys who make magic happen on the basketball court.
A good ball handler and a great passer can create instant offense on any team, and some point guards can defend the ball just as ably too.
Let’s take a look at the best 5 point guards of the last 25 years. This is a tough list to narrow it down and while the ordering may be subject to opinion, I believe that just about anyone would agree that all of these competitors are some of the best to ever play the game.
Steve Nash. At 35 years old, he’s seemingly as good as he’s ever been. Having won two MVP awards, both after the age of 30, Nash has established himself as one of the game’s greats.
Chris Paul. CP3 continues to get better with each year, and he could easily find his way higher up on the list when all is said and done.
Chris Paul fills the stat sheet like no other point guard in basketball. Between his league high assists and steals, his great shooting ability, and his rebounding prowess, Paul is truly one of a kind.
Another one of a kind player very worthy of a spot on this list is Jason Kidd. The modern day triple double king is an anomaly when you consider his ability to rebound despite his height. Kidd is another aging player who hasn’t slowed down yet.
After Kidd comes a pure point guard in John Stockton. He was the king of assists year in and year out while he played, and he found great success in Utah with Karl Malone and the Jazz. Year in and year out, they were a competitive team thanks to his proficiency at the position.
You probably know who number one is, especially since I’ve mentioned the other four. Magic Johnson is simply the best point guard to ever play the game. His assists per game were higher than anyone on this list, and he’s the only one here to have won a championship too. Enough said.
