Rooney comes under fire from Woodward
Controversial yet undoubtedly talented Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney doesn’t often find himself too far from the line of fire in the English press but, despite those who try their best to defend him, it is usually the case that the forward deserves this criticism as a result of his poor behaviour both on and off the football pitch.
The most recent escapades from Rooney came on the pitch, with the striker left facing the anger of the FA after swearing quite clearly into a Sky TV camera after scoring a crucial goal in a Saturday afternoon league clash with London side West Ham. With Premier League games at that time of day always likely to attract the sort of young viewer who looks up to Rooney as a role model, the violence and strange element of anger in his reaction was, in many people’s eyes, not acceptable.
That said, Sir Clive Woodward is just one man who has been unafraid to come out and criticise the striker in public, with the former England rugby coach stating that iconic players in the public eye have a duty to behave with a level of respect and modesty that in Rooney seems simply absent.
Woodward went on to undermine the role that Sir Alex Ferguson plays at the club and in Rooney’s wider development, with the former rugby coach revealing that part of the job of being a manager and a leader is to instruct players how best “to handle pressure moments” during games. Woodward also hinted that the club would have been within their rights to ban Rooney for acting in the way he did without having to wait for FA involvement first.
With Woodward’s highlight of his coaching career surely leading the English rugby side to World Cup success in Australia back in 2003, his opinions should be taken into account, especially in light of the fact that England have failed to perform as a team or as individuals during recent World Cups, with Rooney especially guilty of that, so perhaps his attitude is at least partly to blame for this.
Whether Fabio Capello or Sir Alex Ferguson take any notice of Woodward is another matter entirely, but something has to change where the United striker is concerned, and fast.
