Park Ji-Sung Staying with United
Manchester United have already lost one highly rated midfielder in Paul Scholes due to retirement and it looks like Park Ji-Sung wants to do the same, but not for a long time. The Korean midfielder, who joined United from PSV Eindhoven in 2005, looks more than happy to finish his playing career at Old Trafford and is showing no intentions that he wants to leave, despite recent speculation that United would be willing to let him go: “I want to stay here and I have no reason to leave.”
Now more than ever, it would appear that the Red Devils need to maintain strength in their midfield with Scholes hanging his boots up after an illustrious career during which he made 676 appearances for club and scored 150 goals. Now without this influence, the midfield has to band together and work harder to not miss the play-maker.
United’s plans, in light of this, will focus very much around Park, who has impressed many since arriving at Old Trafford despite some initial criticism at the logic of his signing. The scrappy Korean has been lauded for his non-stop work ethic which takes him all over the midfield and along the wings as a creative force to be reckoned with.
This is, of course, nothing new, as Sir Alex Ferguson has always regarded Park as a player for the big games, the Korean putting in the performances when they are needed the most, which is exactly what wins titles and Cups. In fact, Ferguson’s decision to omit Park from the 2008 Champions League final has since been described as “the hardest decision I have ever had to make” by the Scottish manager. Ever since then, Park has proved his weight in gold to Sir Alex, appearing in the two consequent Champions League finals against Spanish champions Barcelona to put his name in the history books as the first Asian to play in a Champions League showpiece event.
Players such as Vidic and Carrick have come out to claim that there is enough talent within the United squad already to fill Scholes’ boots and Park is certainly a part of this.
