Looking Inside The Numbers With NFL Odds
Perhaps you are checking out the latest professional football games, and you see some numbers by each team. You may have a partial understanding, that one team is favored over the other, but there is more to it than that. If you wish to understand NFL odds a little better, here is a brief description.
Examining the Point Spread
When you check the weekly schedule, your favorite team may have a number beside it. That number is a handicap that is assigned to a team by bookmakers. This number is also known as a point spread, and it will be a positive or negative number.
Suppose your favorite team is the Tampa Bay Bucs and they are playing a team called the Carolina Panthers. The Bucs may have a minus three, and there may be no number by the Panthers. This means that Tampa is favored by a field goal, or three points. Now suppose that the final score is Tampa 17 and Carolina 16.
If Tampa beats Carolina 17-16, then you might think that you win, if you bet. However, this is not the case, as Tampa must win by three points, or cover the spread. You can bet on Tampa, and still lose, if Tampa wins the game.
If you place a bet on Carolina, you will win, even though Caroline loses 17-16. In this case, Tampa does not cover the point spread. At some betting sites, you may see a dollar amount by a team. If Tampa is minus $125, this means that must bet $125 to win $100. If that amount is $150, you must bet $150 to win $100.
Summary
Understanding NFL odds is not hard. One team is given a handicap for the point spread, and the money betting is done on $100 against the amount listed. Also, make sure that you deal only with legitimate betting sites.
