Jones earns big money move to United
Phil Jones, Blackburn’s highly-rated young central defender, will next season play for Premier League champions Manchester United after signing a deal thought to be worth in the region of 17 million. The defender passed a medical at the club a few days ago after revealing he wasn’t interested in considering the option to join Arsenal or Liverpool, with those clubs both desperate to add quality to their defences during the summer months.
Jones has managed to establish a fearsome reputation for himself in the Premier League at a faster rate than most of the household names football fans across the world are familiar with these days, the defender making his first appearance for Blackburn just last year in the Premier League after working his way through the club’s youth set-up. At the moment he is preparing for the European Championships with the Under 21 international squad but there is surely no doubt that Jones will be more excited by the thought of arriving permanently at a club which already boasts defensive talent in abundance.
Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, United’s first-choice pairing in central defence, will surely help the youngster to improve during training, while the competition provided in that position by Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling, whose debut season with the Red Devils went extremely well, should take Jones to the next level quicker than would normally be the case. It may well be that Evans, who didn’t enjoy the best of seasons in 2010/2011 could choose to jump ship to make way for Jones, but that is nothing but speculation at this stage.
Wayne Rooney and Jason Roberts were among the first to react to the transfer news, both strikers regarding him as one of the toughest defenders they’ve played against either competitively or in training, and Sir Alex Ferguson has made little secret of just how much he admires the defender.
Ferguson jumped at the chance to bring Jones to the club before potential interest from Liverpool, the Gunners, Chelsea, and Spurs intensified as it was expected to, and it is thought the United manager met with the player’s immediate family, promising them that the club would encourage Jones to flourish as a player in a stable and welcoming environment.
With United now boasting what is surely one of the best defensive squads in the world, they look set to provide opposition attacks with a near impossible task for the next five or ten years, especially if David de Gea joins up with the club as expected.
