Henderson joins up with resurgent Liverpool
Jordan Henderson, England’s young midfield star, has signed for Liverpool from Sunderland in a deal thought to be worth around 20 million, with manager Kenny Dalglish and the Liverpool board fighting off apparent interest from Manchester United to attract the player to Anfield. Henderson will now travel to the club to undergo a full medical before agreeing personal terms after the transfer fee was accepted happily by those involved with Sunderland.
It had been expected that Henderson would become one of the first notable names in the Premier League to move before the start of next season after excelling in the early stages of the previous campaign for Sunderland, particularly in the side’s 3-0 drubbing of Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, and also making his England debut after catching the eye of Fabio Capello. Even though the player’s international debut was widely slated in the media, the youngster looking very much like a man without too much experience to his name against a hungry France side, a number of Premier League clubs still recognised his potential and made him one of their summer targets.
The 20-year-old was named last season as one of the 13 young players to watch by FIFA, and is currently preparing to join up with the England Under-21 squad for the European Championships. However, it is likely that he will make this deal his priority as the week unfolds, with the player desperate to take a forward step in what has already been an impressive career trajectory.
Niall Quinn, Sunderland’s widely admired chairman and former player, made it quite clear in the press that the club remain thankful to the midfielder for the level of performance and commitment he showed during his time there, while also hinting that the transfer fee for Henderson, which many feel was far too high, will allow Sunderland to add real quality to their squad in one or two key positions.
Whether or not Henderson will fit in well at a club that is still struggling to haul itself back into contention at the top of the English game remains to be seen, but there’s no doubting he has the spirit and determination to help the Reds with their bid for glory.
