Andre Villas-Boas Gets Backing of his Team

Andre Villas-Boas is preparing to kick off the upcoming 2011/2012 Premier League campaign against Stoke in a welcoming atmosphere that would appear to be entirely conducive to moving full steam towards another league title, with Chelsea stars Florent Malouda and Ashley Cole both putting their faith in the new manager by confirming they have no desire to leave Stamford Bridge this summer.

Rumours have circulated wide and far this summer concerning interest from AC Milan and AS Roma in the French international, while Spanish giants Real Madrid, now under the leadership of former Chelsea head-honcho Jose Mourinho, were thought to be itching for a reunion between the Special One and Cole.

The decision from Cole and Malouda goes to show the admirable level of respect and confidence that the newly arrived manager has been able to instill in his squad since coming to London from Portugal. He may well be the youngest manager in the Premier League by some distance at the tender age of 33, but Villas-Boas has plenty of experience in the European game and both goalkeeper Petr Cech and Ashley Cole have been vocal in their criticism of those who believe the Chelsea boss does not have the right level of experience to allow him to compete at the highest level of the game domestically.

Ashley Cole was reported in the papers as saying: “Age is just a number; he has experience of being at Porto, a big club”, while Cech repeated that philosophy, revealing: “You don’t measure people by age, but by quality. If you are 18 and capable of being a manager of a big club, the age will not stop you doing so”.

The record breaking season secured by Villas-Boas at Porto proves what the man is able to achieve with a talented bunch of players at his disposal, with the manager guiding the Portuguese club to a treble while also becoming the youngest manager ever to win a competition in Europe. The experience he gained at Chelsea while under Mourinho has also been regarded as a key reason for his success.

That said, it should be noted that the longevity and commitment of the young manager has yet to be tested, with his longest spell in charge the time he spent at Porto. We’ll have to wait and see if the ever-demanding and impatient Roman Abramovich will allow him the luxury of time at Stamford Bridge.
