There are 58 Indian casinos in California, operated by 57 different Native American tribes. Last year, Indian gaming across the United States by 233 tribes accrued total revenues worth $26.5 billion. Suffice it to say that this is big business.
But it wasn’t big business a couple of decades ago. The tribes started offering games in the 80s and when the state clamped down, the tribes sued California. In a landmark judgment in 1987 (California vs Cabazon) the tribes won the right to run their casinos without state interference.
But the very next year, in 1988, Congress passed the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) which put the casinos under partial state regulation. The tribes still get to keep the revenue, but they now have to adhere to many state regulations regarding casinos and the kind of games that are allowed.
As for the Indian casinos in California, they’re spread pretty evenly across Northern California and SoCal, with the remaining dotted around Central CA. These 58 casinos put together have 63,835 slot machines and more are in the pipeline. As of now, 10 more casinos are slated to add to the existing lot of 58.
San Diego is the Indian gaming capital of California. The county has more Indian gaming casinos (12) than any other city in the US. This includes the Viejas Casino & Turf Club in Alpine, Harrah’s Rincon Casino & Resort in Valley Center and La Jolla Trading Post & Casino in Pauma Valley. Many more are in the works, and it’s quite possible that San Diego will end up as the Vegas of Indian casinos.
Their rules regarding admission are slightly ambiguous. Since most of these casinos serve alcohol, the minimum age to play is usually 21. But they do allow minors into the premises, considering the casinos are also tourist attractions. Many times visiting families with children will want to visit a casino, and they’re all allowed in.
