A Basic Glance At The World Of Roulette
For more than a few people, the doors to a casino open into a world of soon to be realized riches. Between one and ten, as well as the range of twenty through twenty-seven, odd numbers are colored red while even numbers are black. From 11-19 and 28-36, the reverse is true. In American roulette there are two additional green colored pockets: 0 and 00.
Bettors can make various types of wagers. The most simple is the straight bet. In this case the bettor would put his money on a particular number(s) and/or zero/double zero and hope that number hits. The rub is this: in the American version of the game the odds of winning are one in thirty-seven; however the payout is only 35 to 1. This disparity represents the “house’s” advantage.
There are myriad other betting opportunities. For example one can bet exclusively on whether the ball will land in a red or black pocket. The player is rewarded with an even money payout, while her odds of winning are 1.11 to one.
Other betting opportunities include betting on low vs. High and even vs. Odd. The odd/even is self explanatory. The low/high divides the numbers in half. People can bet on low half (1-18) or high half (19-36.) Again, payout is even money and the odds are a little greater than 1:1.
For a higher win opportunity, there are more choices yet. “Top line” (numbers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3) pays 6:1. Putting money on a green space pays 17:1 and either of the two green spaces will be included. Odds of hitting that are 19:1.
Over the years there have been many “systems” which claim to give the bettor the edge over the casino. Unfortunately many of these methods rely on the “gambler’s fallacy”. Simply put, this notion espouses the idea that after some time a certain number just has to hit. This of course is hogwash. The wheel does not condescend to long streaks or gambler’s hopes. Each new spin of the wheel carries with it the same odds of winning or losing.
In the end luck will dictate your success or failure. However it does not mean you cannot have a ball playing roulette. It is an exciting and social game that just might net you a few extra dollars in your pocket.
